What raised gold foiling is
Raised gold foiling is a metallic gold finish built up on the surface of the card, so it sits slightly raised, a 3D finish you can feel, and catches the light with a gold sheen. It's the same idea as a raised spot-UV coating, but in gold, silver or rose gold instead of clear. You'll also see it searched as gold embossing.
That's what sets it apart from printing gold: flat printed gold is level with the card and looks matte, while raised gold stands above the surface and reflects the light like gold, silver or rose gold. You choose which parts get the finish, so you can raise just a logo, name or border and print the rest of the card in colour, or gild the whole design.

How do I set up my artwork?
The gold needs a separate mask file. Alongside your normal artwork, supply a second file with the areas you want gilded filled in solid black and everything else left white, so we know exactly where the gold goes. Send both as vector files (AI or PDF) with a 3mm bleed, or design your card online in the studio. Because printing is digital, printed colours are matched as closely as possible but can vary slightly. After you order, we share a free proof 24 hours after your order is placed, and print only once you approve.

What's the difference between raised gold foiling and printed gold?
Printed gold is ink, so it's flat and looks matte. Raised gold foiling is a metallic gold built up on the surface, so it stands slightly proud of the card, has a texture you can feel, and catches the light with a gold sheen that flat printing can't match.
Is this the same as gold embossing?
Yes, it's often called that. The gold is built up on top of the card into a raised finish, in gold, silver or rose gold.

Can I have the finish on both sides?
The gold is applied to one side of the card. You can cover as much or as little of that side as you like, from a small logo to the whole design.
